How to create new habits

As a life coach and business coach I often help people create new habits so they can improve their results. Habits actually give your brain a rest as you kick into a habit that is already embedded. This keeps your brain from thinking so much or having to make decisions. Their is tons of research on this. For now all you need to know it you can change your habits. You can instill new and positive habits that will help you to achieve your goals.

Here are 3 simple steps to create new habits for greater results. They are cue, routine, and reward.

  1. First let’s talk about cue. A cue is simply something you put into your environment that reminds you to start the routine. One that has worked for me is putting my exercise clothes on the floor next to my bed before I go to sleep at night. This cues me first thing in the morning to exercise.
  2. Second is routine. This is easy enough to do. Your routine is simply how you do a specific task or action. This may very easily be helped by writing down the steps needed to be completed. A great example would be the different types of weight lifting exercises you are going to do and the order you are going to do them.
  3. Last, but certainly not least, is the reward. Rewards come in all sorts of things. It could be the great endorphin rush you feel after working out. It could be a long hot bath. It could be… anything that is healthy, positive and uplifting.Good luck on your journey!
